How to Design a Professional Product Label: Layout, Margins, and Typography

A useful product label lets a person identify the item and read the necessary information without covering or crowding the barcode. Start with the information and physical package, then arrange the artwork. A neat layout alone does not establish regulatory compliance.

Plan an 80 × 40 mm example

For a demonstration label, use the product name “Sample component”, reference DEMO-01 and a separate lot line. These are fictitious values for layout practice.

1. Enter width 80 mm and height 40 mm in the editor.
2. As an initial design choice, reserve 3 mm inside each edge. This leaves a 74 × 34 mm working area; adjust it to your printer and stock tolerances.
3. Put the product name near the upper left and the reference below it. Leave a separate area for the barcode and its readable value.
4. Keep a clear background around the symbol. An outside label margin does not replace the barcode's own quiet zone.

Avoid a full-width paragraph in every row. A short product name, reference and production fields are easier to inspect than a compressed block of text.

Choose type at printed size

Use a legible font supported by the browser and examine an actual print. There is no universal minimum font size that makes all regulatory text compliant. Required type size, x-height, wording and language depend on the product, market and information concerned.

If text does not fit, first remove unnecessary repetition or choose larger stock. Reducing all text until it fits can produce a label that looks acceptable on a zoomed canvas but cannot be read on the package.

Match the artwork to the print process

A pre-cut thermal label and a professionally cut colour label have different requirements. Ask the printer or supplier for its printable area and feed tolerances. UDImaker exports the chosen page size; it does not automatically add a separate commercial bleed or cutting specification.

Keep dark barcode elements on a plain light background. Place decorative borders, logos and coloured blocks away from the quiet zone. For externally produced EAN/UPC symbols, preserve the original proportions and required clear space when importing the artwork.

Review before reuse

Print at actual size, attach the label to the intended package and check visibility from the normal reading angle. Compare every field with the approved product data and scan the printed code with the intended reader. Save the editable JSON alongside the reviewed output so later changes can be traced to the same layout.
