How to Create a GS1 DataMatrix Label for UDI Medical Devices

Yazar: Mert KILIÇ (UDI & GS1 Compliance Specialist) - July 14, 2026

Step-by-step guide to encoding GTIN (01), Mfg Date (11), Exp Date (17), Batch (10), and Serial (21) into compliant DataMatrix symbols.

Medical-device identification requirements vary by market, device, packaging level, issuing entity, and production method. GS1 DataMatrix is one commonly used GS1 carrier for UDI, but this guide is not a substitute for a regulatory assessment. ### GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) - **(01) GTIN**: 14-digit Global Trade Item Number. - **(11) Manufacturing Date**: YYMMDD format (e.g. 260728). - **(17) Expiration Date**: YYMMDD format. - **(10) Batch / Lot**: Alphanumeric lot code. - **(21) Serial Number**: Unique device serial. UDImaker automatically compiles FNC1 symbology and human-readable labels matching GS1 specification guidelines.
